The year 2011 has been remarkable in very many ways. Let us look back:
The Uprisings

On 25th January, the Egyptians decided they had had enough of Hosni Mubarak. Even with the fall of Hosni, they are still revolting to date.

Up in arms

On 15th February, the Libyans saw that their neighbors in Egypt had done something great and followed suit. Thus began the protests against the then leader Muammar Gaddafi. The EU and NATO were pretty interested in this war. Maybe the oil had something to do with it? While Hosni Mubarak is still languishing in jail, Muammar died at the hands of the opposition on 20th October after 8 months of intense fighting.

The end of an era...

The Elections

After 6 months of intense campaigns from the 8 candidates, Uganda had an opportunity to decide who will be the president for the next 5 years. As usual, the incumbent took the lead and the opposition cried foul. The opposition cited vote rigging, ballot stuffing among other election malpractice.
In any case, HE. YK Museveni promised to eat the opposition like “sumbusa”

In 2011, the Ugandan Parliament saw the incoming of a number of young representatives like Hon. Gerald Karuhanga.

The Evictions
The new Kampala City Executive Director is a woman with a mission. The mission is to bring back sanity to Kampala city. With her kind of zeal, we shall soon have a city with no potholes, no floods, no dust and no street vendors who were the first to be evicted.

I mean business!

Climate Change
In the last half of 2011, we have experience heavy rains that have left untold destruction in form of floods and mudslides in the Eastern part of the country. These claimed lots of innocent lives.

God, help us!

Deaths
- On 25th September, the world woke up to the untimely death of Prof. Wangari Maathai. In her own words; ““All of us have a God in us, and that God is the spirit that unites all life, everything that is on this planet.” May she rest in peace.

- On 5th October, Mr. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Inc. succumbed to pancreatic cancer. May he rest in peace.

We pray for those who lost their lives in this year. May the Lord grant them eternal peace.

Sports

The Uganda Cranes still failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. The highly anticipated match between the Cranes and Kenya’s Harambee’s Stars ended in a goalless draw.

That we knew not?
That we cared not?
That our hunger dictated?
Or that we hoped all would change?

They will judge us
When they see all this destruction
When they see how selfish we are
When they see what we could have done
What shall we do then?

We will tell them
That we did it for them
That we knew but chose to ignore
How sorry we are
That we hope they forgive us!

PS: This poet feels that not enough is being done to protect the environment. We need to do more so that it is preserved for our children. So that they too can save it for their children…That is how legends are created!
Maybe then, when they (our children ) remember us, they will smile!

40 Rules for Living

6. Never laugh at anyone’s dreams.
7. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it’s the only way to live life completely.
8. Don’t judge people by their relatives.
9. Talk slow but think quick.
10. When someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, smile and ask, “Why do you want to know?”
11. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
12. Call your mom.
13. Say “Bless you” when you hear someone sneeze.
14. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
15. Remember the three R’s: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.

31. Pray — there’s immeasurable power in it.
32. Never interrupt when you are being flattered.
33. Mind your own business.
34. Don’t trust a lover who doesn’t close his/her eyes when you kiss them.
35. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
36. If you make a lot of money, put it to use helping others while you are living. That is wealth’s greatest satisfaction.
37. Learn the rules then break some.
38. Remember that the best relationship is one where your love for each other is greater than your need for each other.
39. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

The Meaning of Life

A story is told by Robert Fulghum, a Unitarian minister, about a seminar he once attended in Greece. On the last day of the conference, the discussion leader walked over to the bright light of an open window and looked out. Then he asked if there were any questions. Fulghum laughingly asked him what was the meaning of life. Everyone in attendance laughed and stirred to leave. However, the leader held up his hand to ask for silence and then responded “I will answer your question.” He took his wallet out of his pocket and removed a small round mirror about the size of a quarter. Then he explained “When I was a small child during World War II, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place. I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept the largest piece. This one. And by scratching it on a stone, I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun could never shine. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places that I could find. I kept the little mirror, and as I grew up, I would take it out at idle moments and continue the challenge of the game.

As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game, but a metaphor of what I could do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of the light. But light – be it truth or understanding or knowledge – is there, and it will only shine in many dark places if I reflect it. I am a fragment of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have, I can reflect light into the dark places of this world – into the dark places of human hearts – and change some things in some people. Perhaps others seeing it happen will do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.”

Do we reflect the light of Christ into the darkness of other people’s lives? Will the world be a better place for our having been in it?
